The Semaphore & Port Adelaide RSL Sub-Branch hosts the largest ANZAC Day Dawn Service in South Australia outside of Adelaide City every year.  This year the Sub-Branch invited all Schools in the Adelaide region to participate in a special remembrance activity to commemorate the final year of The Centenary of Anzac 2014 to 2018.

The President of the Semaphore & Port Adelaide RSL Sub-Branch, Colin Johns, sponsored “Banners for ANZAC Day”.   Letters were sent to the schools with instructions, materials and a reply-paid envelope for students to decorate a banner to be displayed at the Semaphore & Port Adelaide RSL Sub-Branch during ANZAC Day.

The Centenary of Anzac 2014 to 2018 is Australia’s most important period of national commemoration. Marking 100 years since our involvement in the First World War, the Anzac Centenary is a time to honour the service and sacrifice of our original ANZACs, and the generations of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women who have defended our values and freedoms, in wars, conflicts and peace operations throughout a Century of Service.

One of the most important legacies that can come from the Anzac Centenary is to improve community understanding and awareness of our wartime history, particularly for younger Australians.  Students were asked to select from the themes of service, sacrifice, remembrance, comradeship and veteran welfare when decorating their banner.
